Tax rules for home offices vary significantly by country — and often by employment status within the same country. Here's a plain-English summary of how each country in this calculator handles it.
United States: As of 2018, employees cannot deduct home office expenses. Self-employed workers can use either the simplified method ($5/sq ft, max $1,500) or the regular method (actual expenses × office percentage). The office must be your principal place of business and used exclusively for work.
Norway: The tax authority (Skatteetaten) allows a deduction for a home office if it constitutes at least half of the home and is used exclusively or mainly for business. The deduction is based on the rental value of the dedicated workspace.
United Kingdom: HMRC allows employees a flat-rate of £6/week (£312/year) without receipts. For actual costs, you calculate the proportion of home running costs attributable to your office. Self-employed workers can use simplified expenses (£6/week) or actual cost apportionment.
Germany: From 2023, Germany introduced a flat-rate Homeoffice-Pauschale of €6/day worked from home, capped at 210 days (€1,260/year). This applies whether you rent or own, with no requirement to have a dedicated room — making it one of the most generous flat-rate systems in Europe.
