Bring the chair to the shared table
Opsvik's 1972 design addressed the mismatch between a child's size and an adult dining table. His account explains the aim as one chair adaptable to different-sized people, bringing children into the same activity rather than seating them at a separate low table. [1]
An adjustable seat and an adjustable floor
The backrest stays at table height while both seat and footrest adjust in height and depth. Opsvik describes the broad footrest as a floor that supports movement and changes of posture. The mechanism is therefore about the relationship between feet, seat and table, not simply lifting the seat higher. [1]
Stokke describes the chair as made primarily in European beech and oak. A wood species belongs to a selected configuration; the family name does not identify the timber of an individual chair. [2]
Accessories have their own history
Opsvik's account distinguishes the early wooden support rail from the later Baby Set. It dates the Newborn attachment to 2010 and an angle-adjustable revision to 2019. The basic chair's long life does not mean that every accessory belongs to the same generation. [1]
