Design history & editions

Design year and production year differ
Wegner designed CH24 for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949. The manufacturer dates its introduction to 1950 and reports continuous production from that year. Keeping these dates separate avoids turning the start of manufacturing into the date of the design itself. [1]
The Y is a structural member
The top rail combines armrest and backrest in one steam-bent piece. The Y-shaped back supports that rail while leaving the back visually open. The seat is woven by hand from paper cord; the manufacturer's account gives approximately 120 metres of cord and about an hour of weaving for one seat. [1]
A collaboration and a manufacturing sequence
Carl Hansen & Søn connects CH24 to Wegner's earlier studies of Chinese chairs and to the partnership agreed in 1949. Its manufacturing account separates shaping and assembly of the frame, surface finishing, and the final woven seat. The finished chair therefore combines a bent component, joined solid timber and a tensioned woven surface. [2]
Models and editions
| Model / edition | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|
| Adult CH24 | The consulted product configuration is walnut with an oil finish and natural paper cord. It is one material/finish combination, not the specification of every Wishbone. [1] |
| Children's Wishbone Chair | Developed with Wegner Design Studio, the children's model was re-proportioned rather than simply scaled down. It uses solid oak components and woven paper cord; adult measurements do not apply. [3] |
What this record does not establish
The adult reference dimensions remain in the table. This entry does not establish all historic seat heights or wood/finish combinations. A Y-shaped back alone is not evidence of manufacturer, age or authenticity.
