A restaurant commission, not a generic pendant
Henningsen designed PH Artichoke in 1958 for Copenhagen's Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant. Louis Poulsen identifies that commission as the origin of the design. The conspicuous outer form and the concealment of the source were developed together: the lamp is both a visible object in the room and a system for reflected light. [1]
Seventy-two leaves
The metal design arranges 72 leaves in twelve tiers. Their overlap shields the light source from direct view while allowing light to reach and reflect from the surrounding leaves. Louis Poulsen describes much of its production as handwork. The leaf system distinguishes this design from the concentric shades of PH 5, despite their shared designer and manufacturer. [1]
The glass edition has a separate date
Louis Poulsen launched PH Artichoke Glass in 2008. Its account connects the design to Henningsen's earlier Septima experiments of 1927–31. Hand-made, sandblasted glass lets light pass through the leaves as well as reflect from them; it should not be treated as merely a new colour of the metal pendant. [2]
